The auther writes in order to give and pass his ideas and story and not what the fans want. If the fans think that Gosho is writing the manga in order to satisfy a certain group of fans, they are wrong. So what if fans will be angry? Did it matter when there were 8 episodes of Endless Eight? Did it matter to the warner bros when they delayed the release of the sixth movie of Harry Potter? Should it matter to Gosho after he will end DC? NO!
So you would think. Initially, writers write to pass their ideas. But they LOVE fan input. You remember I told you I was a writer, right?

Initially they put out their thoughts and ideas. But when fans get excited over a character (it's not necessarily weird to overly like a character), the writer tends to, subconsciously or directly, bring more from the character to the story. It's a known fact. Try writing a novel. I did, and I read it to my friends, and some of them really like one of my characters, which made me happy and made me want to write more about that character, though that character wasn't a main character. Writers want to bring in their own ideas, but they love to please fans too. Why do you think they keep Kaitou Kid in the series when he's not part of the universe? Fans. Fans inspired that from FEEDBACK. They want to keep reader interest, whether they think they do or not. It's a writers' thing...If a lot of people don't give much feedback to a couple, I guarantee you that couple will be shown less and less throughout the series......whether the writer wants it or not. They will continuously write whats interesting. It's kind of like a concert or show. After the concert sometimes, people scream for more or scream and beg for the person to play one song they really want to hear, and at that point they are so into the moment and the love and support of that song, they begin to play it, just to please the crowd. If people don't show much support for the song or boo it, they won't play it as much anymore, especially if it got low itunes sells..... ;D It makes the writer proud to know that people are interested in his ideas, and if he sees people interested, he'll continue to produce it more frequently. If it is something generally most people are against, Goshyo will be disappointed, and that doesn't mean he'll get rid of the character, but specific aspects of the particular character might begin to disappear or the character might not be shown as frequently.

FOR INSTANCE: Not many people were in favor of Eusike. Eusike hasn't appeared since Clash of Red and Black....and might never come back to the series.  Not many people were in favor of the AyumixConan couple, so the series is showing less and less of that slowly but surly. It's how it is. The less interesting a character is or becomes, the more they start to vanish or certain qualities disappear that were once there .....also my suspicions of Ran soon. Her "personality" will be shown less and less until the end as the BO becomes the main focus...
Spoiler:
That's what happened in Cardcaptor Sakura, initially, CLAMP was going to make Yue the one Sakura loved the most, but the demand was so high for SakuraxSyaoran when it was read to several friends, they changed it.

I just love taking psychology and writing classes in college! I'm such a know-it-all of human behavior now!  ;D
actually.....if you look in one of the threads in the off topic discussion, you'll find out that I am writing a novel. Still, if authers made a plot according to their fans' demands, the book would be bad. Fans may come up with good ideas but if my novel gets released, I'd prefer to get hate mail than do what the fans want me to. If it's about a character then I wouldn't worry about that, because I don't have the heart to kill any of my characters (except the ones that I have to kill). I'm writing the book with my ideas, not the fans' ideas.
As far as we are aware, Rowling kept the last chapter in her vault since the early nineties (though it's not very believable. and I didn't read the books but that's what she said) so according to that, she intended to go in her way all along. There were no fans when she wrote that chapter. She wanted to go with her story and that's what she did.

At this point in detective conan, if you have read or watched until now, even if Gosho kills Haibara, you wouldn't stop to watch it, because you also want to know the ending.
Wait until it's released. You'll think differently......Initially, you'll release the first, see feedback, and make adjustments for sequels if there are demands for more.

you think that now, but that is words from the writer who is confident in his/her abilities. Writing doesn't work like that all the time. Of course, you want to keep characters and put your thoughts and ideas and keep it there. But in your subconscious mind, you will feel the energy from fans. Fans can be very powerful driving forces to how much of a role you give characters in LATER series.
You may not get rid of characters, but slowly in later series, you will find yourself drifting towards characters/plots/ideas that fans liked most in previous works.

Example: People loved the original Harry Potter so much they demanded a sequel. As the author, Will you give the fans what they want or move on? This also depends on your career choice. You may or may not be a writer for a career...don't know. Regardless, if fans love the novel enough, they are going to demand for more. It is no different from if they really like a character. If they really like a character enough, they will demand more from you, and they will demand to see more from that character. It is no different from if people love a couple a lot. The writer will probably be shocked, but will definitely feed into the fans' demands, even if the ending outcome isn't in favor of the group. If more and more people like it, Goshyo will try to make people come back for more and will try to keep the reader satisfied to a certain degree.

If people really don't like a character, you might not get rid of them, but you will subconsciously write less and less about that character, and they might not play as big of a role in the next series. This is especially prominent in characters that are not very important. They start to disappear from the series as the series progresses because they can't contribute much.....

With anything that requires consumer sales, input, especially from fans, is valuable to your success. Don't ever forget that.  ;) But it has to be a lot of fans who agree, not just a small few to influence a writers' subconscious mind....however, the number of fans can change overnight and take you by surprise.....

Ai is an adult. In ~10 years Mitsuhiko will also be an adult. They'll be more-or-less the same. It's a binary situation; Ai won't have gone from adult to aging adult because that's something that has to do with the body and the amount of time one has left to live, which she won't be subject to.

I don't see what going to school twice has to do with anything.
soratothamax wrote:3)Haibara has had a rough, doggy-dog life at this moment, and Mitsuhiko is young and not exposed to the world. So he hasn't acquired much wisdom or understanding.
No one's really suggesting that Ai could be interested in Mitsuhiko as he is now, are they?

The phrase is "dog-eat-dog", by the way.

You are placing much too much importance on generation…what’s so important about exactly when a person was born? Especially in this case, where the older person has been magically regressed in age to match the other.

So, why are people so afraid to discuss it? This is a discussion board, not an argument. Debates happen in discussions. Why are people so afraid to discuss things? It's an interesting topic to me. Even if he doesn't end up with Ai, it is still good to voice opinions of this pairing, right? Boards are meant to have many different ideas about things, right? So, why not have many different opinions. And if you can state your opinion calmly, and back it up with conclusive evidence, and get others' ideas and evidence, why not? You might find something or learn something new about DC you didn't notice before, right?

Uhh... why are so many claiming claiming that Haibara will be 30 in 10 years?
Her body will be 20 then, I think that we can all agree on. (If her body is 30 then she became Shino again, meaning that she is not Ai anymore.)
And her mind... why should she have the mind of 30 year old when she never experienced how it is to be in her 20s? You claim that she will have the mind of a normal 30 year old (and think this makes her to different from Mitsuhiko being 20 then) but during all these 10 years she will be treated by her enviroment like a teenager (Which might be good for her since her teenage live as Shiho was strongly influence by the BO).
Her teachers will treat her like a (smart) teenager, her teenage friends will treat her like a peer, older friends will treat her like a teenager, even the law will treat her like one (no drinking, no driving, need advisor for everything you do, can't have a normal job, etc.), basically everyone - except for the few selected people that know about her past and keep her secret - will treat her like any other teenager. You don't develop the mind of a 30 year old because you were born 30 years ago, but because your enviroment treats you like a 30 year old.
Ai will have none of these experiences. So after her second childhood her mind will stay much closer to that of a 20 year old than a 30 year old.
BTW, that singer example doesn't mean much: If you ask someone in your own age they might not know that group either. Beside Ai doesn't seem to be interested in music at all. Only in fashion if we believe her reading preferences - and then it doesn't matter how fashion was 10 or 20 years ago.

@Kor: If the devil you summoned only grants you 3 wishes you had been tricked. According to "Faust" you get as many wishes as you want in a certain time period or until the conditions in your contract are fullfilled. Which might be never if you are smart enough.
However, I suggest you try keeping your soul.  ;)
Readers input is nice, but... Well, I only wrote some fanfiction and not novels like you do/did/intend to do. But often these readers suggestions were contradicting the intentions I had when I wrote these storys. I don't know how you feel... but I would rather alienate these readers (even if they are many) than writing about something I don't enjoy, don't believe in or didn't want to write about.

same thing for me. The writer is the one who came up with the ideas or plot. Even if the readers would want it to be different, it doesn't mean I should go in their direction. The one who is doing most of the work anyway in the end is the editor who needs to correct all of the writer's spelling mistakes and grammer mistakes the one who writes the story.
I sure hope though that there aren't any desperate freaks out there who would desperately want their ideas to somehow reach me (Though it's probably a fact since famous people like Rowling get hate mail...)

Experiencing how it is to be in your 20s is just like saying experiencing 20 years of life. She will have lived life for 20 years, even if she stayed a child again. She would have been looking young for half her life, but she still would have been alive for 20 years, still making her 20 years old, no matter how old she looks. It doesn't matter how people will treat her, she has had many experiences in life and will be able to know about things her friends couldn't imagine. She will know about growing up in the 90s.....when all of her friends will be growing up in the new age (?) DC standstill thing?). You do not have to be the title "age 20" to have lived 20 years....Shinichi in his body now has been alive for 17 years, even if he is back as a six-eight year old boy's body. Haibara even in a 20 year old body, will still have lived on this earth for 30 years. That would make her an older person. That means she saw life change from the old world she used to know. For the DBoys the future is their world.

She was not born 6 years ago in the DC world, like the other DBoys, she was born 17 years ago, which still makes her 18 years old no matter how old she looks or appears to act. She still has experienced life a lot longer than the DBys have, having her know more about the world.

It's just like if you were a freshman starting a new high school. You are new. You have only been in the "high school world" a year, but the Seniors know all the ropes of the school. Lets say someone who is supposed to be a senior and is still a Freshman because they flunked. Yea, she's still a Freshman, and has never experienced being a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior, but that student knows the ropes of high school because that student has been there for four years, she just stayed in the same grade.....so just like the Seniors that student has been in that school a long time, and can teach the other freshman the ropes.......Basically that student has more experience than the other Freshman, and would be more prone to wanting to graduate and set different goals as they watch the people from their era move on with their life, and they are stuck with a whole new generation.

It's like someone from the 70s using a time machine and getting stuck in the future. It's a whole different era. It's a different generation. The new generation thinks differently than they did in the 70s because the new gen has more technology than children did in the 70s. That person would have to learn about the era all over again, and may find herself comparing her era with the new age future. Some things might seem idiotic.

I never said that Haibara doesn't have the experiences of a 20 year old now. I said she won't have the experiences of a normal 30 year old in 10 years if she stays as a kid.
The difference of a kid grown up in the 80s or 90s... it is not that big, both had friends, both went to school, both played, both grew up, had troubles with parents... rather if there are differences between the two they are more likely caused by their differences in characters or by the slightly different inventions/playthings that make their live easier. If you freeze the older one in time for 10 years or deprive him from any feedback from his environment concerning his age (without damaging is mind) [both ethically not recommended  :P] for that time then these two can become perfect friends/lovers/whatever. The influence of the decade they grew up won't be significant.
Same with Haibara: If she stays a kid she does not make any experiences a normal 30 year old would make, but rather re-experience the experiences of a teenager (without the meddeling of some Black Organisation).
If there are two freshman in high-school: one is 14 (skipped classes), the other is 24 (got seriously ill before and had to redo a few classes but is completly healthy again). Ignore their different stages of maturnity, inteligence and experiences that have nothing to do with high-school.
In terms of knowledge about that highschool ("knowing the ropes" as you called it) they are completly equal. Even though they have a 10 year difference, they both know nothing.
In the case of Ai and Mitsuhiko it is the same: Both have never experienced the live as a 20 year old. Ai might have repeated childhood (classes) but this are her first tween years, just like for Mitsuhiko.

In the case of the time-traveler: He will adapt to his new surrounding. Actually Ai is more of a case who traveled back into the 70s: She might consider some things as idiotic and will miss some inventions and changes of the present... but she will adapt (10 years sound like more than enough) and could live a perfect normal live in 70s, together with a non-timetraveling husband from that time if she chooses to.
