Would DC have been better if Gosho took inspiration from Ace Attorney?
The suspects in AA are funny and memorable
quite unlike DC where they are...just bland and generic withough any original design.
Do you think it would have been better if we had more colorful suspects in DC? Granted, there would need to be way more than 3 chapters per case to fully develop more fully their personality
what do you think?

I don't really know AA, I have never played any single game from that series, but I wouldn't want. You said: "The suspects in AA are funny and memorable" - this is what I don't want to see in the DC. I don't want DC to turn into a comedy. The suspects, policemen, and witnesses should look like real persons, and act like a real persons. I don't want to see in the DC characters that throw coffee mugs...

Yeah, AA is entirely a ridiculous comedy that happens to become super dramatic at point, whereas Detective Conan is a Japanese murder mystery series taken fairly seriously with some very light elements taken from every other genre it can to give it some mass appeal and variety (and unlike most attempts at mass appeal, it actually works :p).
But I do agree that no one on Earth gives a flying hype about the suspects in nearly every case and that is a problem with a good chunk of every episode is focused on people no one cares about.

I think early chapters of DC where way funnier than the current ones though
it's like Gosho decided to lock up comedy into his drawer

I think it was to reflect the tone once the plot started being a thing and that his art style got less cartoony. The early Conan chapters are kinda goofy looking at times, in a good way admittedly.MrDetective wrote:I think early chapters of DC where way funnier than the current ones though

No... Just imagine that for 750 episodes, AA works because the investigations take a long ass time to go through (admittedly still super boring at times).
I would probably hit my limit after 30 cases. There is no reason for Gosho to go through all that trouble for the cases as long as DC is a weekly series and even less for the shorter cases.
The AA investigations don't come out weekly or monthly anyway. I'm sure we could get to read a bunch of cool books from Gosho if he ever decided to write normal novels instead once every few years.

Ace Attorney's characters really only work because you get time to know them. They would be a cast of cliches if you didn't give them time to fully express themselves. Three chapters isn't really enough to establish much by the way of personality when you have to search for clues and address the main character relationship/ overall plot of the week. I wouldn't mind the occasional AA-type, but only in a longer case.

Eh....I think DC works better as it is. Yes, the suspects are usually one-dimensional and occasionally two-dimensional, but then, what do you expect when each chapter is stuffed full of mystery and character interactions. Instead of well-developed suspects we get well-developed recurring characters, and I'd take that over the alternative any day of the week. The mysteries are usually compelling enough to let the case stand on their own, without relying on the suspects.
However, I would like more eccentric people like the suspects in the Night Baron case more often...

I think these two comparisons are the first ones to come to mind while going through Dual Destinies; The Nine Tails Vale investigation (AA) and The Pro Wolf Wrestler Case (DC)
Now I'd say I think AA would have benefited more if the turnabout was alot shorter, and the culprits are getting just super obvious lately but this one was just.. They didn't even try.
However I must say that the backstory and legends were interesting, definitely a redeeming factor for the Monstrous Turnabout. However those were far from being the main focus since there's the murder and the drama going on about the Amazing Nine Tails, so it was simply way too long in my opinion.

Yeah, if I wanted the reverse, I'd watch Kindaichi. :pKudo Shinchi wrote:Eh....I think DC works better as it is. Wait, are you implying Ace Attorney is ripping off of DC?k11chi wrote:Now I'd say I think AA would have benefited more if the turnabout was alot shorter, and the culprits are getting just super obvious lately but this one was just.. They didn't even try.Spoiler:

No... They're both clearly just referencing some random old school story and making their own spins on it. I've seen this in either CSI or NCIS also. I guess it's going from having a mask on for simple shock factor without any real explanation (usually what you see in horror stories?) to using this kind of explanation on why they're wearing a mask...Chekhov MacGuffin wrote:Wait, are you implying Ace Attorney is ripping off of DC?k11chi wrote:Now I'd say I think AA would have benefited more if the turnabout was alot shorter, and the culprits are getting just super obvious lately but this one was just.. I follow a certain series in which the manga-ka gives pretty much every character that gets shown for more than one chapter a backstory. There was a comment on the latest chapter that read, "There are so many characters now I don't even know who I should be paying attention to anymore."
...and this is a sports manga, where it should be obvious that you probably don't have to pay much attention to characters outside of the main character's team. If DC had the same sort of development for all of the suspects, we'd get a headache trying to figure out which characters are actually going to be important to the story as a whole and which ones are just going to drop off the face of the earth after the case is over and never be seen again.
