Minute Mysteries

Post by Juansmarts »

I used to love trying to solve these mysteries as a kid(even though since it is on a forum, you'll get more than a minute), so now, I want to challenge the brilliant minds of DCTP with them.
It is pretty simple: I'll give a scenario, and all you have to do is answer/explain. You can ask questions about it, but they can only be "Yes or No" questions.

#1: Two guys go into a bar, and they order the same exact drink at the same time. The drinks are exactly identical, and they were made the same exact way. When they got their drinks, One guy drank it very quickly, and he enjoyed it. The other guy drank it very slowly, and he died. Why did he die?

#2: There is a man named Bob who lives on the 12th floor of a building. Every morning, he takes the elevator down to the 1st floor to go to work, but every night, he takes the elevator up to the 7th floor, and walks up the rest of the way. Why?

#3: A man was found hanging from the ceiling of a warehouse dead, and nothing was in the warehouse except for a pool of water. How did he die?

I'll try to find some more mysteries for you guys, but for now, these are the ones I know.

Update: I got some other ones, but I think they are too simple for you guys(I see them more as riddles than mysteries), but it might be just me.

#4: There were two policemen were guarding the outside of a bank at night when a burglar broke in and threw them in an airtight car trunk. One hour later, the other policemen opened the trunk to find one alive and one died of suffocation. How did the policeman survive for the hour?

#5: A woman shot her husband, put him in water, and hanged  him. Then, they went out for dinner. How?

#6: A dead man left a will to his two sons that stated that they would have a contest where they would race camels from their house across the desert to the city and back, and the one whose camel came last would inherit all of his possessions. They started their race, going as slow as they could, and upon reaching the city, a wise woman spoke to them. After speaking, the two sons raced as fast as they could back home. What did the woman say?

#7:Three people check into a hotel. They pay $30 to the manager and go to their room. The manager finds out that the room rate is $25 and gives $5 to the bellboy to return. On the way to the room the bellboy reasons that $5 would be difficult to share among three people so he pockets $2 and gives $1 to each person. Now each person paid $10 and got back $1. So they paid $9 each, totalling $27. The bellboy has $2, totalling $29.Where is the remaining dollar?

#2 -  Bob was only tall enough to reach the elevator button for the 7th floor.  He could easily reach the first floor button so no problems when going to work.

#3 -  He fell out of a plane and it was raining.  He crashed through the roof and became stuck in the support beams while water was able to enter in the form of rain.

#1 -  Did he drink it so slowly as to die of starvation or thirst?  Or was it on fire?

Well that one is correct, but I find it funny that you didn't include 13 as a floor number, since people don't want a room on the 13th floor(bad luck...).

aren't right, but I think the #3 was my fault. What I meant was he was hanging from the ceiling of the warehouse like on a noose. On #1, the guy didn't drink it slowly like he waited for days to finish it, but more like he took little sips, while the other guys chugged it down in that instant.

Alright, how about this for #3

A guy tells his girlfriend that if she leaves him, he will kill himself.  She is a pilot.  He climbs atop her plane and sets his neck in a noose.  She flies off removing his support (standing on the plane ) and he cries as he swings.  The tears drop and form a pool of water.

As for number 1, my last guess:

The drinks were both poisoned.  The first guy didn't die because he drank it all at once and less of the poison was able to become absorbed by his digestive tract.

#3 is wrong, and to clarify, to warehouse is all ok(no holes anywhere in the roof), so the guy didn't fall in a place on the roof where he could have jumped through a hole and hang himself(if that is what you were saying).

About #1, if both the drinks were poisoned, how is it that the guy who drank it quickly didn't get as much poison as the guy who drank it slowly, when the drinks are exactly the same?

#1:  I believe this has to do with the density of the liquids.  The poison is less dense than then antidote, much like oil is to water.  Because of this, the antidote would rest on top of the antidote.  The person who drank it quickly would receive both the poison and the antidote, whereas the person who drank it slowly only ended up drinking the poison.

#3:  Hung himself while standing on a block of ice.  As the ice melted, his neck snapped, and the ice became a puddle of water.

In #3, I am saying he climbed the plane to hang himself.  The plane leaving acted as a table moving out from under his feet.  He was standing on the plane with a noose around his neck.  No holes in the roof.  The tears became the source of the water.

In #1, if the amount of poison was very low, then it could be safely taken in a quick chug.  However, if taken slowly so that every bit of the poison was allowed to enter the blood stream, then this could be fatal.

Yep, GinRei, you are probably right, but that would have to be a pretty big block of ice to reach the roof of a warehouse.

#3 is correct, but #1 isn't. I can't really say too much without revealing it, but i will say that both men drank all of their respective drink.

Well, if it doesn't have to do with liquid density, then it must be the ice.

The one who drank it quickly did not give the ice time to melt, so any poison frozen within did not have a chance to enter the drink.  The one who drank it slowly however, allowed the ice to melt, and thus drank the poison within the ice.

To bad I didn't read this earlier :(... the answer is obvious (and if I remember correctly it is from the episode of DC where they are at the school play and Shin'ichi dresses as the main character dude and kisses Ran).

#5 Is she a photographer???
#4 I doubt this is the answer but if I remember correctly there is a mechanism inside trunks for such a case. I agree with ten though... because if he immediately killed the other and monitored his breathing there should be enough air in the trunk.

I have a couple mysteries in case you want some more...

Part IV of Desparate Revival, the best Conan episode there have been or will be (forgive my silly authoritative tone).
Detective Movies Contest 2013: Information Thread  Current Faceoff

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."
