It's a silly pet theory I came up with to explain why Bourbon hates Akai's guts and why Gosho used Char Aznable as the pun for Akai's name. I'd also like to put on the table there is zero evidence to support it. Mangaluva and Kor(?) came up with the same idea independently too.

Yeah, I thought about it too (as you said). The worst turn of events if it's true, is that Gosho will say that Bourbon and Akemi were childhood friends.

There's not that many other groups of characters to show up with. Conan has two groups of chars he is frequently with
#1 Kogoro, Ran, Sonoko
#2 Agasa, Haibara, Ayumi, Genta, Mitsuhiko

Less frequently
#3 Heiji, Kazuha (but usually with group #1 involved)

Much much less frequently
#4 FBI
#5 Yuusaku and Yukiko

Take out a few members of a group for any one given case, combine some of the groups, maybe throw in a character of the week (Eri, Kaito Kid), and mix and match the cops involved and you get pretty much every Detective Conan case that has been written. "Overexposure" as you put it is pretty much unavoidable given this case setup style. I don't mind it because the focus of the case is usually pretty varied.
