Ran, because not only does she know Karate, she's less likely to freak out and has been proven to be better at protecting those she loves.

(Although if Satou-keiji was a choice....)

If Satou was a choice and you relied on her...you'd probably get beat up/mauled/robbed/kidnapped. Satou would probably forget that she's suppose to protect you or with her weird mind, think that the people that are about to assault you are your friends.

As for the question, Ran. Though it's not really a fair question as we haven't seen Kazuha use her skills that much in the canon(she's used them more in OVAs and Movies). Should of been Ran vs Makoto

P.S.-Ran punches people in the heart(M10). If someone is going to watch my back, it's a person that punches others in their heart.

100 % Ran  . She always kick bad guy´s butt. Also she is the champion in a Karate Tournament and the captain of her karate team in school  , and remember that she also can fight against a B.O. member like Irish  .

I'd say Ran, though I think I'd REALLY want Kid-sama watching my back... he's got projectiles and is also, as was shown in MK a couple of times, fairly handy at fighting himself. ♥
