Studio Ghibli

Post by RubberStamp »

Anyone a fan of Studio Ghibli?

The first Ghibli movie I saw was Kiki's Delivery Service. I was relatively young then but I remember I was immediately smitten by the world Miyazaki had created through his narrative. I grew older and eventually the movie became a distant childhood memory like the terribly animated Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. But I was drawn into Miyazaki's world again when I saw Princess Mononoke as a teenager and since then I've seen almost all of Studio Ghibli's movies. I was a little disappointed by Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (though I think the soundtrack for it is absolutely kick ass ). My favorite Ghibli movie is Spirited Away with Howl's Moving Castle coming in at a close second.

So...apparently Studio Ghibli's latest movie The Borrower Arrietty is being released in Japan on July 17th. Anyone going to see it? If I understand correctly there isn't a set release date yet for America or for any other country for the matter, so it'll probably trickle in a bit later on dvd or something. I'll be waiting for it. It's going on my list of movies to get/watch.

Apparently the theme for the movie is called Arrietty's Song by Cecile Corbel (I believe she's French). I am absolutely in love with it already lol. Hopefully they don't do a terrible, horrible English version like what happened with Ponyo's theme.  :-[ That was really disgusting.

Here are the two trailers for the movie:

Kiki's delivery service was incrediiible!! Studio Ghibli is awesome, love those guys - and yeah, the world they create, especially in Kiki's, just sucks you in.

Another thing that's awesome is Professor Layton. Its artstyle/story seems to be incredibly influenced by Studio Ghibli's work, which is awesome,

and Studio Ghibli is actually making their own game called Ninokuni (or at least animating the cutscenes)

Yeah, isn't it wonderful? Ghibli teamed up with a Japanese developer Level-5. The trailer is such a tease. The graphics are beautifully rendered, it just looks amazing.

I heard it plays like a Ghibli film and all I can say is WIN! Even more win that the soundtrack is being composed by Joe Hisaishi.

I ADORE Studio Ghibli. The first movie I ever saw was Princess Mononoke in school, one of those Last Days Before Summer when even the teachers can't be arsed and they just play movies all day. I was absolutely enchanted. The story was like nothing i'd ever seen; the lack of truly good or bad guys, Jigo, the unusual sorta-happy-sorta-not ending, the Kudama, the emphasis on environmental care. The beautiful artwork captivated me, too. A little while later, I saw Kiki's Delivery Service and adored it; I started looking them out and now I own pretty much all of them on DVD.

I saw Ponyo in cinema recently, and I loved it. My brother hated watching it with me because I was squeeing at something cute about every five seconds, but I loved it ;)

Yay. Added a poll. Everyone vote :)

I did enjoy Ponyo, I think what bothered me about the movie was whenever Ponyo did "magic" she turned into this half-human, half-bird looking thing and I thought it was a bit odd.

Anyways, obligatory Totoro picture. Roar@@

I'm definitely a fan of Studio Ghibli, especially Miyazaki. I watched many of his movies when I was a kid. My favorite one is actually Howl's Moving Castle, with Princess Mononoke coming as a close second. I haven't seen Ponyo yet, and I'm not sure if I want to watch it because some people were disappointed by it. What do you guys think?

Personally I don't regret seeing Ponyo. I suggest you do so regardless of what others say. Ponyo is still as immersive as any Miyazaki movie, with beautiful animation and a wonderful orchestrated score. Like many Studio Ghibli movies, it's still somewhat grounded in our world with familiar elements while still being pleasantly exotic and strange.

It's a little more childish than most Ghibli movies, akin to My Neighbor Totoro, and I think it gets a lot of flak for that. But I don't mind it so much.

One of the weirdest parts about Ponyo to me was that as a fish, she had a face, and only one of the old ladies freaked out about this upon seeing her, which was because she was bad luck, not because she had a face.

Anyway, from the Ghibli I've seen it's pretty awesome. I like how they have more focus on the atmosphere itself than the story at times, though some people also seem to hate Ghibli for the same reason.

As for favorite, had to go with Spirited Away, because of No Face, who is awesome.

The story of Nausicaä is excellent, however I vote Totoro for re-watch value (Kiki a close second in that regard).

Have yet to see Ponyo, My Neighbors the Yamadas, Tales from Earthsea, or Howl's Moving Castle however.

maybe it's because I heard about how immensely depressing Grave of the Fireflies was, but honestly it wasn't all that depressing to me. It was a downer, sure, but nowhere near as bad as people would have me believe.
