Has conan Got a higher intellect than Law From One Piece

Post by svbmnmon »

Actually as the both are from mangas and both have shown great ability to have better intellect than the rest of the manga characters i wanted to know if one of them is superior to other and who is it.

I don't watch One Piece, but once I saw a poll concerning the smartest manga characters ever and Conan was among the first ones

It's probably embarassing that I've been a fan of One Piece for nearly 9 years and yet I have no idea who Law is. :p

I've read a little of One Piece. One Piece doesn't exactly involve much by the way of logical deduction, so it's too hard to compare the two. Most genius characters in magical boys shounen typically are implied intelligent: you aren't shown any of their thought processes for how they figure things out. You are told the input and then see the results - their head is a black box. Most authors aren't confident enough (or don't want to do the extra legwork) to show the guts of advanced deductive reasoning because it is difficult to avoid holes or they are concerned about their characters not seeming smart enough. Gosho is a bit of an exception, probably because he is in the detective genre and Gosho is very thoughtful and intelligent.

Seriously one of the most repetitively asked questions in writing help forums is "how to write smart people". A metric buttload of people have trouble with this because it is hard to write the internal perspective of someone much more intelligent than oneself and make it convincing.

(Not relevant to the thread, but my opinion on how to write geniuses is to make sure they think through and arrive at conclusions quickly, and to write their thoughts like they have a group of people in their head tackling the same problem from different perspectives. If you are an author trying to write how a genius might puzzle through something, simply ask a bunch of people you know how they would think to solve a problem, and then mash all those people's techniques up into one stream of thoughts.)
