Meh.  First gym is easily beatable with a simple evolution for any of the regions.  And if not, there are other Pokemon to catch.  Using Kanto as an example: Butterfree or Mankey.

Meh.  First gym is easily beatable with a simple evolution for any of the regions.  And if not, there are other Pokemon to catch.  Using Kanto as an example: Butterfree or Mankey.

good point, i don't know why, but my starter is always evolved whenever i reach the first gym, i just train it until it sweeps the first gym, i never catch any lasting pokemon before then (except for mareep in SS, which you can catch before falkner now)

One thing I LOVED about FireRed was that when I was spam training my early squad in Viridian Forest (Pikachu, Pidgey, a Metapod that I was trying to evolve and Charmander) My Charmander hit level 13 and learned METAL CLAW! Killed Brock, killed Misty with Pikachu, things went well from there 8)
