E3 2011

Post by ranger »

So, after Day 1, what do peeps think about E3? Some pretty slick stuff out there - Mass Effect 3, Uncharted 3 (looks amazing!), a new Halo(!!), another CoD, Battlefield 3, new Assassin's Creed, Sony's new handheld "Vita"..

This shall be the thread to talk about all cool games during the superbowl for videogamers.

I for one, hope to attend E3 somewhere in the future (would just be pure awesomesauce).

Also, I have to say, Halo 4 caught me by the balls - I had no idea they would announce that, but i think what people should know is that it's not developed by Bungie, which could be a good thing (for people who disliked the Halo franchise) or a bad thing.  As a legitimate sequel to the Halo series, you have to expect this high quality from this game.  Something else to point out, is that in 2007, Halo 3 was toppled by the new FPS king, Call of Duty.  Now, Modern Warfare has been sitting on top of the throne for almost 5 years now - it would be completely ironic, and somewhat cool, if Halo regained it's throne.

Out of the press conferences so far, I have to say I am really pleased with Sony - good job handling their PSN downfalls, some good hardcore game footage (Uncharted looks simply amazing!), and the Vita shows some real compromise.  I really hope it gives Nintendo some competition in the handheld market, because no one likes a field where one company just completely dominates the market ( a la mp3 for Apple).  Plus, competition stirs better quality, which is always good for consumers.

Another game that looks really cool IMO is Bioshock Infinite.  Bioshock 1 was an awesome game, ahead in it's time for atmosphere and story-telling.  However, Bioshock 2 was like a "Trey-arch" sequel, not changing anything and having a lackluster story.  It was only given decent reviews due to it being based off the masterpiece of the original.

But, Bioshock 2 was not developed by the same guys as the first, and Infinite is regarded as the true sequel of the series.  The atmosphere is refreshing, good gameplay, and most likely a killer storyline.

Batman Arkham Asylum and Elder Scrolls Skyrim are another two great games that are probably a must-buy for me this year - there's
not much to say other than the fact that these two games WILL be contenders for game of the year for 2011.

Battlefield 3 is a dark horse in my opinion, it looks incredibly appealing as a true sequel to Battlefield 2, but I don't know if it will truly be a CoD-killer.

I'm probably one of the few (if not only) members here that care this much about the video game industry, so I'm not expecting too many people to comment on this thread, but if you wanna say something is cool or w/e, feel free to.

Ah I forgot to mention that >_< haha..yes, Nintendo has a LOT riding on their press conference - the thing is, I think the world won't be swayed again by the whole "motion-gimmick" of the wii.  I was listening to a podcast that made an excellent point:

The Wii is in most households and is usually bought by parents for their children.  They'll usually have some form of a party game (wii sports/mario party) and some mario games.  However, due to the fact that almost everyone bought a wii (non-gamers included), they realized that the wii would be gathering dust most of the time.  (Wii owners in the forums, is this not true?  You will probably play your wii...about 4 times a year :P for every 1st party Nintendo game released, which isn't a lot).

So, Nintendo's new console has to be significantly better to get those sale numbers that the Wii generated during it's console life cycle.  It has to have the hardware power to make third party games actually legitimate on their new console unlike the wii (3rd party was pretty much crapware).

Or, they need to have some sort of incredible innovative technology.  I have heard rumors from some people that the new Nintendo console (possibly just named Nintendo in fact) will utilize some sort of touchscreen similar to the Apple products.  Just a rumor, we shall see if I'm right tomorrow.

I haven't been an Nintendo fan since the N64 - I was incredibly disappointed by my purchase of my gamecube back in 2001 due to the lack of quality 3rd party games and the long waiting periods for their 1st party games/ and no new IPs.  If Nintendo wows me and gets back the 360/PC/Ps3 gamers who ditched them, that would be just awesome.

Assassin's Creed: Revelations I believe will be multiplatform for 360/PS3, and possibly PC in the future.

Uncharted 3 is awesome, unfortunately I don't know too much about Bleach Soul Ignition - I don't think it's really a triple A title so it probably won't get too much media coverage during E3 :P (infact, I don't even know if it's getting showcased, I'd have to look into that).

Hm... Let`s see...
7 am - 2 pm : School Day
2 pm - 4 pm : Take a nap
4 pm - 6 pm : do something.
6 pm - 2 am : gaming time :P :P

My console history are NES, SNES, PS1, XBOX, PS2, XBOX360 and PS3.

Sometimes some people challanged me while I was visiting local game center in my city because I was known as unbeatable player on CTR and Marvel vs Capcom LOL

DreamCast really disappoints me and GameCubes lets me down >_<

I played PC Games when I was in Junior HS, which is the era of PS2. And started Online Game 4 years ago while I`m entering university. I`m still playing DoTA everyweek even now :P

anyway back to topic, at this E3 there is supposed to be some announcement for PS4 development and Nintendo`s project cafe, right? Is there any info about that?

I love you Nintendoooo!!! You saved E3 :D. Yeah, no on-stage game demos but who cares when almost all the announcements are significant and so awesome?

Well, Sony's press con was okay but not much surprise. Microsoft's press con? They opened the con with the new Call of Duty game...what a surprise ::). And too much Kinect for me...cute games though

Link hanging around in the Wii U trailer is such as a tease. Reminds me of the trailer used to showcase Gamecube's capabilities.

I'm unfortunately not much of a gamer anymore. So I'm only really looking forward to Assassin's Creed Revolution, the new Zelda, Skyrim and the Wii U console.

Bioshock Infinite is another thing I'm looking forward to as well. A city in the sky? That's flipping bad ass. I hope it's as atmospheric as the first BS. I remember I could hardly get through the game without someone in the room with me because the splicers would scare me so much.

Assassin's Creed Revolution. Ezio is still kicking butt, even if he is old as hell and that is pretty ace. AC1 was tolerable, ruined because of its repetitiveness. Still, I very much loved the storyline. I also loved AC2 and ACB. And I'm hoping that ACR plays the same way. I mean, Brotherhood certainly didn't revolutionize the mechanics since the second game, merely built upon them. Same old, same old, but good. And I'm fine with that.

Yesterday I watched a 7 minute clip of in-game game-play of Skyrim and that game looks so awesome. I'm dead excited for it. I'm not one for vikings, as I prefer medieval-ish knights (like in Oblivion) and Skyrim does feel very Nordic/Scandinavian. But I don't mind. The game has dragons that fly around and are menacing and swords. I like swords.

As for Zelda and Nintendo's new console. Admittedly, I am a bit of a Nintendo Fangirl. So if Ninty mentions anything Zelda I am on board without question. Zelda is hands down one of my favorite game series and I've been a fan since LttP. And, while I think the new Wii U looks a little like the Xbox 360 and the touch screen controller is a bit funky, I'll trust Nintendo on it. They know what they're doing.

I remember the first time I saw the Wind Waker graphics. I was like 13 and I raged so hard. I was like "ZOMG LUKS SO CHILDISH. WTF IZ DIS??!" But I grew to appreciate them and I loved WW all the more for its graphics. Lol.

My E3 grades for the big 3's press conference:

Microsoft: A-
-As the underdog for this year's E3, they didn't have any trump cards like Nintendo or Sony - however, they hit hard with their core games, Gears of War, MW3, Tomb Raider, Mass Effect 3..and was able to sell their Kinect peripheral well by integrating into these hardcore games.  And to top it all off, Halo 4 was announced, which is a very big thing.  A solid job by Microsoft in my opinion.

Sony: A
-A great job handling PSN outage, a great variety of hardcore games such as Uncharted, Resistance 3, Bioshock Infinite, a new MMO called DUST 514 (made by the people who did EVE online), a new Ico and Shadow of the Col HD remake (awesome!), Battlefield 3, and of course, the new Vita.

Nintendo: B-
-Their big thing was their new console, now announced the Wii U.  Okay, the touchscreen innovation is cool, but it's not something unseen ; the technology has been out since 2006 with the Iphone.  It didn't wow us like it did with the wii 1.  Plus, they didn't properly address their weaknesses in their last console - online capabilities (which are still unknown and were unstressed in the press conference), they are still lacking in power compared to current gen consoles which is a really bad thing when Sony and M$ release their new consoles.., and lack of 3rd party big-hitters.

What you are going to see is a huge lack of sales compared to the Wii 1, seeing how it has a much higher price range, and people have learned from the Wii 1 that it gathers dust 4 out of 5 times during the year.  THey aren't going to sway the hardcore gamers with their lack of online and big games either.

Nintendo needed something big, this is a bit far-fetched, but for example: have Gabe Newell of Valve walk in during Nintendo's press conference and announce HL3 being on the Wii U.  Something like that to prove that they could actually have high-quality 3rd party games, rather than wait every year for a decent game to come out by Nintendo.  While the HL3 part is kind of crazy, you catch my drift: Have some studio with a solid reputation in the industry to make a game for the wii!
