Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
Maybe because spats does not appear to be something used in tennis. Anyway, I had forgotten about AZFS but watching that case now, the sub did not look like their best effort.
On to this week's episodes.
One would suspect that the translator would be older since he or she used "Holy Nelly" in 333. Yet in 334, "dat river" is something you would expect tend to expect from someone on the younger side.

From what I found last week, there are two types of spats; the things that cover shoes (used by clydesdale horses mainly), and compression shorts that are used for lots of things including sports.Conan-kun wrote:Maybe because spats does not appear to be something used in tennis.

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
This week in 335, Yukiko says it is possible that the people following them "is a great fine of mine!!!". Sub this week also misused "loose" for "lose", but then everybody on the internet does that.

Little late this week as something unexpected came up. Moving on, we learn this week in 338 that all the hospitals in their area are closed on Sundays. All except the one inside a department store.

I'm guessing they mishandled "byouin".

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
If I were to grade the finished sub of 339, I would give this very low marks. "Ded", "WI", "mant", and "wcame" are not even proper words. Add this to the variety of name spellings: Araide, Araid, and Niide along with the usual: Jodie and Jody. Probably the worse came in the opening when the sub read "Jodie, Shinichi and Bellmot appear" instead of "Jodie, Araide, and Vermouth."

Oh geez.
Let's hope when 345 rolls around soon they'll at least get Vermouth right.

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
Among the many subtitle bloopers this week for 341 & 342a include: case,n, timem, t oilet, epeated, "She put this cassette tape numbered from 1 to 200" instead of "1 to 20.", Kalbados, Konnichiwa being translated as "I'm Conan", and alreay.
On the bright side, at least we know why Ran always brings Conan along. That is "because if I'm not around, Conan won't be able to eat his meals..."

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
I'm half-surprised they didn't misspell Huis ten Bosch (at least in the NEP). Yeah, I know it shows up on screen, but it's not exactly obvious to someone who doesn't know the language that Dutch "huis", which is cognate with the English "house", is pronounced the same as the English word.
And these subs have been known to make mistakes like that in the past.

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
Twice this week, there were words spoken with no on-screen translation. First one was during the opening because 342 was split up. Second occurrence was when Ran asking a question in 343.
Well, the subber didn't forget the unusual spellings for 342b. Not sure why as there is no copyright on names. Seabolt is used instead of Siebold, and Pushke in place of Psyche.

I'm going with "no idea how they were supposed to be spelled".

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
That's not a good trait for a translator.
For this week, 345 starts and is supposedly an important case. If that is so, 344 hardly provides any hype for this 5 episode special. I mean it is hard to get excited when the closing of 344 reveals the title of the next episode as "Night of the Full Moon and the Black Banquet Trap."

Oh, it's an important case... and it's gonna be creepy to watch it given that I translated a good chunk of that ep myself for the DCTP subConan-kun wrote:That's not a good trait for a translator.

Re: I Don't Know What I'm Doing
I would think that anybody who has ever done any translation for this series must cringe when watching these subs. These are supposed to be official subs, yet there is no quality control at all. Somewhere along the process, there is somebody who just does not read English. I do not know any Japanese, so I am not even complaining about the quality of the translation. It just seems like they are not taking this subtitle work seriously when the finished process contain way too many English errors each week.
Fortunately, there are only a couple glitches this week for 345b and 345c. I personally see no purpose in having multiple spellings for a character's name.
