As a matter of fact, the whole 4-digit password and its solution made me think of the DC episode "Ran's Suspicions". For a moment I hoped the answer to Adler's password would be 4869.

Although I have to say, much as I loved Scandal in Belgravia, I'm still waiting for the modern Sherlock Holmes adaptation that features Godfrey Norton. Badass as modern interpretations of Irene tend to be, I always thought it was really sweet that all of the sneakiness and badassery was to protect the man she really loved.

- The giant "rat" of Sumatra mentioned briefly in "The Sussex Vampire", which has become a popular point of pastiches over the years because of Doyle never elaborating on it further despite teasing that it was quite an extraordinary ordeal. We know that The Empty House will serve as the basis for the season opener in some form, so it's possible that "the giant rat of Sumatra" will be a new codename for their version of Colonel Moran, or possibly the codename of someone that crossed Moriarty and as such was labeled a "rat". There are many possibilities, but an actual "giant rat" (not literally of giant stature) can only serve as the basis to so much given we just did an animal story with HOUN last season.

- "Wedding" almost definitely refers to the under-appreciated story of "The Noble Bachelor". It's also possible that we could be seeing Watson married too, though, with him finally deciding to move on to something resembling a normal life in the beginning of the premiere episode. If so, when Sherlock inevitably reveals himself again, Watson may already be engaged or something. I wouldn't be surprised if they incorporated bits and pieces of the Charles Augustus Milverton tale into this too.

- "His Last Bow", which is a very, very odd choice given that it is (chronologically-speaking) the very last Sherlock Holmes story and, altogether, not especially ripe for adaptation in the vein of what this series usually does. I'm certain Moffat & company will twist it as they usually do into something modern and dazzling, but as it is, it's an interesting choice. Cumberbatch recently said he wouldn't retire from Sherlock anytime soon, so I don't think there's much worry that this will be the last episode or anything. Still, I'm intrigued as I consider it a very unique story and a proper send-off to the relationship of Watson and Holmes as it is written.

Well said... Though i think wedding doesnt refer to the noble bachelor as Moffat almost certainly said that he would adapt Watson's wedding...... Though they may mix it up...

I saw the first two episodes a few years ago on Netflix. It's a very good series.

I stopped watching because I realized how much tribute the first episode pays to the first two books in the series, and wanted to read the rest of the books first before continuing.

I figure Wedding refers to John, because Watson got married like four times in the books (I'm not entirely sure about the number and I don't think Conan Doyle was either : x ) so surely he's got to get hitched at least once.

I'm not even going to try to figure out the other two because odds are good that Moffat is trolling or outright lying, and even if he's not I have no doubt they're going to come up with something too clever and subtle for me to guess.

Also, with concern to Elementary, after Benedict Cumberbatch was misquoted as implying Jonny Lee Miller taking the role for money, he said:

I am both bemused and upset at this misquote. I never said that Johnny took the job for the paycheck nor did I ask him not to do it. What I said is I would have preferred not to be in the situation where we will again be compared because we are friends. I know for a fact his motivations were to do with the quality of the script and the challenges of this exceptional role.

It is baffling because I have only been supportive of an incredibly talented actor who I am proud to call a friend taking a job I know he is going to enjoy immensely and be wonderful in.

Over 70 actors have played this exceptional character before us. To say that there can be only one Holmes would be ludicrous. We're both thrilled to get the opportunity to play him in a modern context. The world of Sherlock Holmes and the world that we live in now is big enough to take more than one interpretation. As a genuine Sherlock Holmes fan I am greatly looking forward to his series.

I hope the mad Sherlock fans around the interwebz (not here, mind you) take the last paragraph to heart.

My money says they don't and you might as well get some popcorn to watch the Elementary vs Sherlock war rage.

I have some issues with the setup of Watson's character, but beyond that I'm interested to see what they do with it and I do want to watch Elementary when it comes out.
