Requesting translator for GBC game

Post by calc84maniac »

More specifically, Meitantei Conan - Karakuri Jiin Satsujin Jiken. There already exists a partial patch for the graphics/menus located here.

Oh, so you think I'm asking somebody else to do all the work? By no means! I've hacked into the game myself and reverse engineered the text data, and I made a full text dump in unicode, which even includes info about which character sprite is being displayed (only for characters that I know the names of so far).

Better yet, if this text dump is modified in-place with English text, it can be run through a program I wrote and be inserted back into the ROM, fully working. Right now it only supports capital letters because currently it's a good idea to co-exist with the japanese tileset, but we can easily replace the tileset with a fully english one later.

More importantly, text dump proof (be sure to view in UTF-8):

You do realize that translating is much more difficult and time consuming than doing that?
Detective Movies Contest 2013: Information Thread  Current Faceoff

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

You do realize that what I did was also difficult and time-consuming? The translation itself is something that I have no experience in, and there are a lot of skilled translators here that have been working with Detective Conan scripts for years. I'm trying to make it as easy as possible to translate without having to worry much about technical stuff.

Translating and embedding the translation takes a lot of time for a game. I suppose your link is not the whole game. Can you tell how many Mo is the full script?

That link actually is all of the text in the entire game (unless I missed some, but I don't think so). The entire ROM itself (all the gameplay, graphics, and text) is only 1MB. This is the Game Boy Color we're talking about here. As for embedding the translation, I've already mostly taken care of that side of things.

Edit:
I just checked the exact size of text data after I insert it into the ROM, and it's around 90KB.

Hi guys, I registered here just to tell you about my new project.

I don't know if anyone's still interested in playing the Conan Game Boy Color games, but seeing as 13 years have gone by without any real progress, I decided to tackle all three games myself. :)

http://www.romhacking.net/forum/index.p ... 433.0.html

Not many people at Romhacking.net seem all that interested in my efforts, so I came here in the hope that you guys would be. :)

So go to that link, download my patches, and don't forget that I've just uploaded v0.2 of the first game, which should give you a good hour of playing fun.

Enjoy! ;)
